Update – 5 October 2011

Don’t forget that this Saturday 8th October and next Saturday, 15th October, we are running our regular Go Ride sessions at Hinchingbrooke Country Park. We had a great turnout at the last session there, where we looked at mounting and dismounting whilst moving, with everyone picking it up well by the time we finished.

Armed with that knowledge, Emma, Sophie and Holly have all entered their first cyclocross race since then and had a great time. Cyclocross racing is popular through the winter and there are races going on most weekends for all ages and abilities (including parents!). Let me know if you are interested in having a go and I can point you in the right direction. St Ives CC will itself be hosting a cyclocross race as part of an East of England league at Grafham Water on Sunday 13th November so that will be worth putting in your diary, even if you only want to come  along and see what it is all about.

This week we will be looking to build on the last session with practicing more of the same but bringing in gear changing and braking as well. As previously, the sessions will run from 10am – 11.30 am and cost £2.50 per session. If you are driving there and staying around, please note that car parking charges are now in place.

We are now fortunate to have been kindly provided with a few 24” wheel bikes by British Cycling so we can cater for a few people that are unable to get their bike there. These are available on a first come first served basis so I would recommend you drop me a line ahead of the session if you would like to take advantage of this.

We will meet by the cafe just before 10am and head off from there. Please remember to bring a water based drink and a helmet. If this is your first time with James or myself, we will also need a signed parental consent form, copies of which I will bring .

Going forwards, we generally hold these sessions on the first and third Saturday of the month. However, due to prior commitments, the session scheduled for last week, 1 October is being held this week. Therefore, the sessions for the rest of the year will be as follows:

8 October

15 October

5 November

19 November

3 December

17 December

Update – 20 September 2011

Thanks to all for coming to Hinchingbrooke on Saturday.

Hopefully you all enjoyed the session. James and I were delighted with all 15 who attended for getting the mounts and dismounts – those moving ones are pretty tricky on a mountain bike as they stand quite high off the ground. We will do these more and more as part of everything else we do over the coming sessions so it will become easier, I promise! Just to be sneaky, we may try swapping sides next time. Remember you can always practice these at home too – please don’t practice on the road though where there may be traffic and make sure you are wearing a helmet!

Fastest times on the mini cyclocross were Ryan for the boys (0:57) and Sam for the girls (1:04), so these will be the times to beat! Also well done to Dominic, who despite being only 5, managed to keep up admirably with everyone else!

As you had the mounts pretty much nailed, next time we will also add on braking which will be a good way to reduce those times further.

Hopefully see you on 8th October for the next session

Update – 13 September 2011

As summer comes to a close and the schools are back, we now head into Autumn and the next series of St Ives CC Go Ride sessions. They commence this Saturday, 17th September 2011, at a new home, Hinchingbrooke Country Park, Huntingdon. PE29 6DB. Whilst Hemingford has been great, I believe that moving to Hinchingbrooke will give us a wider range of options as a real off road environment.

As previously, the sessions will run from 10am – 11.30 am and cost £2.50 per session. If you are driving there and staying around, please note that car parking charges are now in place. We will be covering many of aspects of improving your off road riding skills, including for example, gear selection, ascending and descending and braking

We will meet by the cafe just before 10am and head off from there. Please remember to bring a water based drink and a helmet. If this is your first time with James or myself, we will also need a signed parental consent form.

Going forwards, we generally hold these sessions on the first and third Saturday of the month. However, due to prior commitments, the session scheduled for 1 October has to be held the week after. Therefore, the sessions for the rest of the year will be as follows:

8 October

15 October

5 November

19 November

3 December

17 December

Update – 14 July 2011

We have now almost completed the summer series of St Ives CC Go Ride sessions, with everyone attending improving their riding from looking at something as seemingly straightforward as mounting and dismounting, or going faster round corners. Whilst the St Ives summer series is coming to an end, James and I plan on starting the next series in September and I will post dates in due course.

Following the last session on 3rd July, we were invited to participate  in Hemingford village sports day. We set up a short technical course around which 20 riders competed for the fastest lap in various age categories and over the course of the afternoon, many riders were coming back to try and beat their elusive PB. The final was a nailbiting face off over 3 laps between George and Henry and given the success of this, I expect to be using a similar format  at the Hinchingbrooke Park event on 24th July.

Update – 26 June 2011

The St Ives Youth Cycling Club Summer Go Ride sessions are now well underway and all the riders are riding faster, more controlled and safer as a result, whilst having fun in the meantime. Over the last few sessions, we have looked at braking, cornering, gear selection and various ways to mount and dismount, along with some balance skills such as track stands (keeping the bike stationery without putting your feet down!), riding under a limbo pole, riding close together in groups and through narrow gaps. At the last session, all the riders were successfully squeezing through gaps with less than an inch to spare!

We are also having regular competitions, both individually and as teams. We have had relay races, mini cyclocross races and individual pursuits, whereby two riders race around the track trying to catch each other.

Coaching sessions have been taking place on the first and third Saturday of each month, with the next session being held on Saturday 16th July. They are held at Hemingford Sports Pavilion, Manor Road, Hemingford Grey, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire PE28 9BX unless otherwise stated. A map is available on http://www.hemingfordpavilion.co.uk/contact.asp
